Canada to introduce vaccine passport soon

In a move to curb the spread of COVID 19 and make travel; easier for international travelers the Canadian Government is looking at creating a digital vaccine passport that would allow citizens to travel abroad and will be available shortly as per government officials. The Government of Canada is working with provinces, territories, and Indigenous communities to create a pan-Canadian proof of vaccination credential. The credential is expected to be available early this fall.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino at a press conference said that the objective of the credential is to make it easier for people living in Canada to travel easily and safely.

The credential that will be informally referred to as a vaccine passport will entail the holder’s vaccine history, vaccine type, date of vaccination, location of vaccination, among other information. The credential will be available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents. Before the passport can be created Ottawa is required to agree on a common approach with the 10 provinces and three northern territories, which are responsible for inoculations against COVID-19.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said that it was a key step that will ensure Canadians have the documents they need to travel once it is safe to travel again. The European Union has a vaccine passport system that allows people to travel freely within the region. Many countries are also working on vaccine passports for both domestic use and international travel.  Canada has one of the best inoculation records in the world. As of July 31, 81% of people aged 12 and over had received one shot and 68% had been given two. The Canadian Government introduced the new travel vaccination policy that will apply to passengers and workers in the federally regulated air, rail, and cruise ship sectors.
